Julia Garretson
I am a hand-crafter in Oregon. I make art from recycled materials, focusing on designing utilitarian items. As a hand paper-maker, I create paper by beating fibers in water until a pulp is formed. Then I create sheets of paper from the pulps of cotton T-shirts, blue jeans, bed sheets, junk mail, iris leaves, corn husks, and other waste materials. When the fibers dry, they form a hydrophilic bond -- It's where science meets art and this has always fascinated me. I made paper with Susie Hardcastle at Flying Cloud one summer, and she is one of the teacher-mentors who has inspired me to make art my life path and to focus on craft with "the mark of the hand." I am blessed to have so many helpful and creative people who have influenced me and helped me to believe that I could make a life as an artist, many of whom I met through Flying Cloud. I make lampshades, light switch plates, stationary, jewelry, and paper, and I take commissions. I sell online at www.JuliaGarretson.etsy.com and at the oldest Saturday Market in the country, in Eugene Oregon.
